The Gr.34 80mm Mortar team is the Axis' Wehrmacht mortar unit. It is used as a support weapons unit for the main infantry forces, by firing explosive mortar shells over long ranges. It has a variety of roles: able to pin and then kill infantry units, blow up most buildings and destroy vehicles and armour. It also can give indirect support to advancing or retreating infantry by shooting smoke grenades that can be used as cover.
The Axis 80mm Granatewerfer 34 mortar is larger and heavier than the Allied mortar unit and can fire a larger bomb over a longer distance, allowing the 3-man mortar team to target remote foes while staying relatively safe from returning infantry fire, the Mortar Barrage ability is particularly effective against massed troops, although it can be targeted at nonvisible areas of the map and even at moving units. If a crewman is killed while using the weapon, a replacement will take his place. If all crew members are lost, the weapon can be recovered for further use or taken by the enemy.
- Always use the barrage ability as it has more accuracy and has a much faster rate of attack.
- The smoke ability makes all units in the smoke take much less damage and they become resistant to suppression. As long as the suppressing weapon fires through the smoke, suppression is not a problem for your troops.
- Mortar teams are very effective at eliminating troops in buildings.
- Mortar teams are also very effective at taking out allied fortifications and emplacements, but watch out for the British 3" Mortar Emplacement as it has the range to effectively counter this unit.
The Mortar team gains veterancy through Support team upgrades, which are available in Kampfkraft Center. Each unit, which is already on the battlefield, or will be built, receive proper upgrades. These upgrades are cumulative to each other, and applies also to enemy mortars, which has been captured from the allied forces. It is worth noting, that this is a support weapon, and if it has been decrewed, and remanned again, it will retrieve the upgrades.

The mortar shells are very effective against infantry and defence structures alike. If coupled with a Sniper to give it longer sight range, it can become a very powerful ally (or enemy). It can also greatly bolster a defensive line, by pinning and killing any infantry and destroying any vehicles.
The team is very vulnerable to quick infantry, as the mortar shells can fall harmlessly away from the charging units, especially if the American's "Fire-Up" ability is used, as ground is covered more quickly. It is also very vulnerable to sniper fire as if two of the units in the team are killed, the third will always die. Before the mortar team can fire on anything, or retreat or move, the mortar needs to be deployed or packed up. This greatly hinders any movement or initial attack as there are several seconds where it cannot protect itself. There is also a "dead zone" very near to the mortar where shells cannot be fired at, so any units very near or next to the team cannot be hit by the mortar.
